No theoretical love

Here’s a very simple illustration:

Lately i’ve been waking up my son to go to the toilet at 5am bcos he bed wets, and if i get him up then he doesn’t wet the bed.

Since i’ve been doing this he has drawn closer to me. He really appreciates me doing this bcos this way he avoids the embarrassment of it.  Then i thought, “Didn’t he realize how much i loved him before i started getting him up?”

We love people, but often they don’t know it unless we serve them.

1John 3:16-18  By this we have come to know love, because He laid down His life for us. And we also ought to lay down our lives in behalf of our brothers.  (17)  But whoever has this world’s goods, and sees his brother having need, and shuts off his compassion towards him, how does the love of God abide in him?  (18)  My little children, let us not love in word or in tongue, but in deed and in truth.
