The work of God touches everything

Comments on Romans 8:26-32

We don’t even know how to pray, but the Holy Spirit does, so we submit to His leading in prayer. How different to slogging it out by yourself! And He knows the will of God and causes us to pray the will of God into being. He makes intercession according to the will of God. This also tells us that there IS a specific will of God for every person. Modern man resents that. He thinks he has the authority to chart his own course as captain of his own destiny. The thought of God’s will for His life being pre-determined by God would be perceived to be an infringement of his human rights.

According to the will of God… we either love this or hate it. If we love this, then we boldly press in and lay hold of the will of God, knowing it is ALL glory.

Then, Paul opens a wider vista. He says that God is in control of all things: that He works all things together for good. He wants the believer to know that the work of God touches every single thing. This is why we pray about every matter on our plate, bcos we know God is at work in every matter. We no longer think in terms of chance or coincidences. Our faith couldn’t be regarded as religious, for it defines all that we now are, and do and think.

Then we find out that God knew us before He made the world. Our faith reaches right back to before the creation to get it’s foothold, for that is when God’s work for us began. Our confidence is in the work of God.

And then He justified us. A finished work. Bcos we know that Jesus has justified us we have confidence. Our faith is based on the fact that this justification HAS already taken place, and it is grounded in just WHO did the justifying. Bcos it was Jesus who justified us we have confidence. I couldn’t have confidence in any one else’s justification, and certainly no trust in any self-justification. There is probably no more pathetic a sight than that of a man justifying himself by his religious zeal.

What shall we then say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? If we have an inferiority complex we might find it hard to accept that God is FOR us. How can He be for us? The natural man often rightly assumes that God is against him, but he may not understand why He is against him. Then, when we are justified by faith in Jesus, it may not immediately come to us that God is actually FOR us now, and no longer against us. We may still carry some inferiority over from the old life and the old man. That’s why our minds need to be renewed by the Word of God, and by not being conformed to this world.

He that spared not his own Son, but delivered him up for us all, how shall he not with him also freely give us all things? This is HOW God is for us: the basis for us to believe such a radical thing. It goes back to the wonder of God’s love, in that just how He could have delivered up His own Son for us. We can’t figure that out. But we believe it and accept it is true. So, also accept that God is now FOR you and not against you. His plans are for blessing and for good, for His glory.
