For I say, through the grace given unto me, to every man that is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think; but to think soberly, according as God has dealt to every man the measure of faith. For as we have many members in one body, and all members have not the same office: So we, being many, are one body in Christ, and every one members one of another. Having then gifts differing according to the grace that is given to us, whether prophecy, let us prophesy according to the proportion of faith; Or ministry, let us wait on our ministering: or he that teaches, on teaching; Or he that exhorts, on exhortation: he that gives, let him do it in simplicity; he that rules, with diligence; he that shows mercy, with cheerfulness. Romans 12:3-8
Live accordng to the measure of faith God has given you: not less and not more.
This means it is possible to come short of this measure, and also possible to go beyond the measure of faith we have. Which is the reason for the exhortation.
We are warned concerning how we think of ourselves, that we could easily think too highly of ourselves: we could easily think we have measures of faith which we actually don’t have. Also possible we could think we have less faith than we actually have.
God has dealt to every man the measure of faith.… Do i really believe that God has dealt to ME a certain measure of faith? It’s a little humiliating, eh. It leaves no room for the flesh to glory. It’s flies against much of what we have heard from “faith” preachers.
Paul says, For I say, THROUGH the grace given unto me... : He knew THE MEASURE OF GRACE GIVEN UNTO HIM. He knew what was the gift of GRACE working in Him.
We should simply, thru experience, learn what is GRACE working in us, and what is merely our own power or ability, and focus on doing what He has GIFTED us to do.
So, we should stretch our faith, and get out of the boat and walk, BUT then SEE how God attends us with power; look out for the manifestation of His grace, and we will come to understand what Paul is saying in the above text.
