Then said Jesus to those Jews who believed on him, If you continue in my word, then are you my disciples indeed; And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free. John 8:31-32
Jesus defines for us here what bondage actually is: It is to believe things that are not true. For, if the Truth shall make you free, then, if you’re not free, it’s bcos you’ve believed things which aren’t true. You’ve believed lies, and are held in bondage by those lies.
Rather than thinking of bondage as a wrestling match, where a big fat wrestler has sat on top of you and you can’t move; rather, think of bondage simply as believing a lie, and as soon as you believe and act upon the Truth in Jesus, then that big fat wrestler runs away in terror. THAT’s the kind of wrestling we need.
But some groups don’t understand this, and they think that getting free from bondage is like a WWF fight, rather than knowing that the chains of bondage were the lies we believed.
It’s been this way since the serpent met Eve in the garden. Satan didn’t get Eve in a headlock, or whatever, and slam her to the mat. He didn’t overpower her that way. He simply offered her a lie and she swallowed it.
In other words, the only way out of the dungeon is to go back out thru the same door by which you entered.
Jesus delivers us from bondage by taking us back out by the same door we entered. That is, He causes us to face the truth, take personal responsibility, repent and deal with it.
If the Light of God’s Word has revealed any lies you’ve believed, anything less than true, then repent and believe the Truth, and the Truth shall set you free.
