“Ye have heard that it hath been said, Thou shalt love thy neighbour, and hate thine enemy. But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you; That ye may be the children of your Father which is in heaven: for he maketh his sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and sendeth rain on the just and on the unjust. For if ye love them which love you, what reward have ye? do not even the publicans the same? And if ye salute your brethren only, what do ye more than others? do not even the publicans so? Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect.” (Matthew 5:43-48)

Be like your Father. Our Father loves our enemies, so, so should we. Our Father does good to our enemies, so, so should we.

We shouldn’t think ourselves above our Father by not being prepared to do the things He does.

If you think of “be perfect” applied to your whole life it sounds daunting.

But if you aim it specifically at each aspect of your life it’s not daunting at all.

Take the aspect of honesty. Do you aim to be 75% honest, 90% honest or 100% honest? Would anything less than 100% honesty be acceptable to you? If not, then you are heeding the command to “be perfect”.

What about your thought life? How much of your thought life should be pure? Would you settle for 90% purity, and 10% filth? No? Then you are heeding “be perfect”, you are wanting to be like your Father.

God deals in specifics. He points at a very specific issue in your life and asks, Will you be perfect in this matter? This is the issue.
