Dear Pastor

Dear Pastor

Did you know there’s only one example of a head Pastor over a church in the New Testament?

Here it is:

I wrote to the church, but Diotrephes, who loves to have the preeminence among them, does not receive us. 10 Therefore, if I come, I will call to mind his deeds which he does, prating against us with malicious words. And not content with that, he himself does not receive the brethren, and forbids those who wish to, putting them out of the church.

3 John 1:9

Diotrephes has two faults, according to the text.

1. He makes himself the sole leader or head pastor of that church.

2. He maintains his position by banning anyone who could challenge his ungodly actions. He maintains his “pastorship” over the church by an iron hand so that no one can question what he is doing.

The epistle doesn’t mention Diotrephes’ motives, but it’s simply the sinful flesh: desire to have authority over others, desire to be important, and desire to use people for one’s own financial gain.

In the New Testament record you will never find a church with one Pastor, or a senior Pastor with junior Pastors under him.

You don’t find it there for good reason.

God had the wisdom and foresight to prevent the Diotrephes of this world from taking the preeminence in His church.
