What is the true Gospel?

“For Christ did not send me to baptize, but to preach the gospel, not with wisdom of words, lest the Cross of Christ should be made of no effect. For the message of the Cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.”

1 Corinthians 1:17-18

There’s a lot of debate, and rightly so, as to what the Gospel or Good News actually consists of.

The Good News is the message of the Cross.

Every aspect of God’s redemption is in the Cross, for this is how He redeemed us.

The Cross speaks of amazing grace, amazing love, a finished work, a gift to be received, the sinfulness of man, the sinfulness of sin, the depravity of man, the lost condition of natural man, the consequences of sin, heaven and hell, the wrath of God against sin, God’s righteous demand and requirement that we repent, the law being fulfilled, the devil defeated, a new creation, adoption as sons, forgiveness of sin, full assurance, peace with God, and so on.

The righteous judgment of God is revealed. The goodness and severity of God.

A perfect sacrifice for sins, offered by God, once and for all.

If we fully preach the Cross, preaching Christ faithfully, then we cover the whole message of God to man. We are then faithful witnesses, faithful messengers.

If we avoid preaching the Cross, then we tend to misrepresent the truth and reality of God’s salvation through Jesus Christ.

If a “gospel” is a “false gospel”, it is so because it is false in relation to the Cross.

Being justified by law, works or effort or by good deeds is revealed as false in view of the Cross.

When you meet people in cults, ask them, Why did Jesus die for you?

They may answer, To forgive my sins.

And you can reply, So, are all your sins forgiven, then?

But God forbid that I should boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world.

    Galatians 6:14

For many walk, of whom I have told you often, and now tell you even weeping, that they are the enemies of the cross of Christ: 19 whose end is destruction, whose god is their belly, and whose glory is in their shame—who set their mind on earthly things.

    Philippians 3:18-19
